What is it?by Frank Senne Most men connect the term prostate with a rather negative experience, usually that of a rectal examination for prostate cancer at their local MD or urologist. This too is one of its realities when it comes to this walnut-sized organ. One, yet far from the only one. The prostate gland is also, especially for sexually active males another, full of interesting aspects that even most of those men are often unaware. It is actually this, half glandular, half muscular organ, that is one of the main areas from which those wonderful feelings during orgasm emanate. Why then all those negative associations? There are a number of reasons, one of the most frequent we already discussed in the first sentence. The rectal examination for a possibly enlarged or indurated prostate gland that mostly elder men suffer from. As the prostate is located in a ring-shaped form around the urethra, it can cause problems when urinating, especially when enlarged due to sickness related enlargement. The enlarged prostate reduces the urethra diameter, preventing complete emptying of the bladder, which leads to frequently urges to urinate, especially during night-time. Also during a preventive check-up for prostate cancer, it is by rectal examination that your MD will attempt to find evidence of a possible carcinoma. Participation in this check-up is highly recommended for all males from 35 years on, as cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent types. Note:Even if you feel uneasy or embarrassed participating in such a rectal examination, you should under all circumstances participate, as it can save your sexuality and your life.Another Note:Recent research seems to indicate that sexually active males suffer less frequently from an enlarged or indurated prostates then sexually inactive ones. Whether or not there is a link between the frequency of sexual activities and the risk to suffer from prostate cancer is not knows to us at this time.But enough of the bad news, although justified. From now on we shall concentrate on the sexual functions of the prostate. The functions that many, even elder and more experienced men, are often unaware of, until pointed out to them that it is the prostate has always been one of the main sources of their sexual pleasure. Indeed, a fair portion of the pleasure, be it from actual stimulation of the prostate, the testicles or the penis, is felt "deep within", the region where the prostate is located. Men, aware of their prostates function and the feelings of pleasure emanating from it, frequently describe the sensations as pumping or welling-up. Completely different from those experienced from mere penile stimulation, which is described as taking place more on the surface. Maybe this is the counterpart to the description of many women, when discussing the difference between a clitoral and vaginal orgasm.
