Everybody knows Giraffes with their long necks, but only very few
realise, that the neck of a Giraffe is supported by only seven vertebra,
just like a humans' neck which is so much shorter.
Because they are so tall, they can feed of trees that no other animal can reach. Their favourite food are the leaves of the acacia tree. The branches of the acacia are studded with long, pointed stings, in order to protect themselves from being eaten. The Giraffes with their long, thick tongue have learnt to pick off the leaves, without injuring themselves. Near Nairobi you can visit the Giraffe Centre, where you can hand-feed, touch and learn a lot about them. |
